Throne Speech: Long on promises, short on solutions for Ontario families

The McGuinty government’s Throne Speech offers no relief to Ontarians worried about their jobs, their health care, and the growing cost of living, says NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.

“Ontario families worried about their jobs, their health care, and the growing cost of living got a Throne Speech that offers lots of talk, but little action,” said Horwath.

Horwath said Dalton McGuinty’s Throne Speech shows he’s out of touch with the needs of Ontario families looking for pragmatic, workable solutions to getting the province back on track.

The NDP Leader said instead of putting Ontario up for sale, McGuinty should be focusing on implementing sound strategies that work:

• A plan to create and protect jobs by making sure public money and provincial resources are used here in Ontario to build the economy..

• Proven health reforms that stop the cuts to our hospitals and save us money in the long run – not random reckless cuts that leave hospitals closing ERs and canceling surgeries.

• Sensible plans to make life more affordable, helping people save for their retirement and keeping the cost of living down – not an unfair new sales tax that kicks people while they’re down.

“Ontario has lost 132,000 full-time jobs since the last election, and across our province surgeries are being cancelled and hospital beds are being cut,” Horwath said. “Ontarians deserve more than lofty talk that ignores their needs.”
