McGuinty government continues to fall down on the job: Horwath

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says today’s report from Ontario’s Auditor General confirms more of the same from an arrogant Liberal government that continues to ignore the problems faced by everyday people.

“From stimulus programs that simply haven’t delivered, to seniors facing increased risk of infectious disease at long-term care homes, to families languishing on affordable housing wait lists, to consumers not being afforded the protection they are supposed to receive, this is a government that continues to fall down on the job,” said Horwath.

The Auditor General’s report rhymed off a litany of failures that affect everyday Ontarians: an infrastructure spending program that has delivered only a fraction of the investment and jobs promised; families in some communities waiting up to 21 years for affordable housing; the lack of consistent tracking of infectious disease outbreaks in long-term care facilities; and inadequate enforcement of existing consumer protection rules on everything from new homes to collection agencies.

“These shortcomings paint a troubling picture of a government that is either unable – or unwilling – to look after the interests of everyday people. The government has no excuse for being unable to deliver in a way that Ontarians should expect,” said Horwath.

The NDP Leader also pointed to the government’s lackadaisical approach to ensuring public safety.

“The Auditor General says the Sunrise propane explosion might have been averted had action been taken earlier. He also points to lack of oversight when it comes to inspecting and repairing Ontario’s bridges. This should trouble all Ontarians,” said Horwath.
