U.S. Steel to shutter Canadian operations

Even through deeply troubled times like the Great Depression and a stint in bankruptcy protection, the mighty Stelco operation continued to run, its steel mills fuelling the Southern Ontario city of Hamilton.

New Democrat MPP Andrea Horwath, who represents the riding of Hamilton Centre, told reporters last night that will be the first time in the company's more than 100 years in operation that it is shutting the plant. Predecessor company Stelco was founded at the turn of the 20th century in the industrial city on the shores of Lake Ontario and managed to keep operating even during the Great Depression, she said.
